Calgary-based Freshbay, which combines greenhouses, vertical farming and sustainable energy sources to grow strawberries year-round, has appointed three new directors with agricultural experience to its corporate board.

The first, Vic Reddy (pictured), is a founding member and CEO of Freshbay, providing the company’s vision and direction and identifying new project opportunities. He has 15 years’ experience developing new business enterprises.

Rob Smith is founder and CEO of Vancouver-based Berrymobile Fruit Distribution, which since 2000 has marketed fresh fruit produced by farmers in British Columbia to most of the province’s major grocery retail channels.

Finally, Jeff Sopatyk is owner and president of Sopatyk Seed Farms near Saskatoon, producing seed peas, lentils, chickpeas, canola, barley, wheat and hemp. He is also a director of Saskcan Horizon Seed Processors in Aberdeen, Sask.

With these additions, the board now comprises five directors. Next on the agenda will be the selection of chair.

“We have begun to corporately structure Freshbay with exceptional board appointments,” says Reddy, “and soon will install new articles for the audit committee to accommodate large capital investment. We’re establishing the governance, compliance, reporting and oversight necessary for success.”
